The Hero's Journey: How to be the hero of your own story

Have you ever heard of the Hero's Journey?

The phrase was coined by Joseph Campbell, a scholar of mythology. He went into the woods for five years and read as many books as his heart could breathe in.

Please take note: the secret to reading and being transformed by a book is not to take it in with the mind, but instead the heart space. Western philosophy believes we must read with the tool of intellect, but this is far from the truth. A book read with an open heart can transform the very fabric of our being.

Enter the realm of mythology.

The study of mythology as a child seems to have been a form of entertaining folktale - however as most things with meaning that have survived the ages, mythology stands to show the potential of man to himself. It serves a framework, regardless of culture, race or history there is a common thread in all our collective mythologies.

The idea we must all reconcile or not reconcile - is whether or not we choose to go on the journey. One must decide if she would like to be the hero of her own destiny and her own conscious choosing or be doomed to be a character in someone else's.

There is a real wonder in making decisions for your own destiny. It is a wonder that societal distraction keeps us from discovering our greatest selves. There are many distractions in today's world, and we must consciously decide if we will answer the call.

What journey do you dare to embark on?
